The goal is to create a stable surface that meets the requirements of the flooring material being installed. That distinction matters. A room may appear level to the eye but still have dips, ridges, adhesive buildup, or structural movement that can compromise the finished floor.

Why a Flat Subfloor Matters More Than a Level Room

“Level” and “flat” are often used as if they mean the same thing. In flooring work, they are different. A level floor is horizontally even from one side of the room to the other. A flat floor has no abrupt highs, low spots, humps, or depressions across the installation area.

Most flooring products need flatness more than perfect levelness. Tile requires an especially consistent base because rigid materials cannot flex over dips or high points.
